Set up in 2001, the .NAME domain name extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are known by. Initially, only 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to purchase john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed 3rd-level domain names remained online.
